FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Richmond Hill, ON – July 26, 2025 – Ontario has achieved its best-ever results at the FISU Summer World University Games, held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, with Ontario athletes playing a pivotal role in the historic performance by Team Canada. Ontario athletes captured a total of three medals—including Canada’s first-ever gold medal at the Games—marking a milestone moment for the sport nationally and provincially.
Ontario’s Nithan Brindamohan (Vaughan, ON) made history by winning gold in the men’s 54kg Kyorugi division, defeating top international competitors including Youngsuk Ethan Gun of the United States in the final. His victory marked Canada’s first Kyorugi medal at the FISU Games since 2011.
Ontario athletes also contributed to Canada’s first medal of the Games in the men’s Poomsae team event, where Ethan So (Richmond Hill, ON) joined teammates Gordon Cheuk and Kai-Hsin Chang (Toronto, ON) to earn bronze after a tiebreaker win over the United States. The women’s Poomsae team, featuring Emma Chau (Markham, ON) and Evelyn Wu (North York, ON), finished a close fifth in the final.
Leonarda Andric (Ottawa, ON), a two-time Canadian senior national champion, added a bronze medal in the women’s 67kg Kyorugi division, defeating opponents from Italy and Kazakhstan before falling in the semifinal to China’s Jiana Xing.
Ontario’s coaching leadership was also instrumental in the team’s success. The Kyorugi athletes were led by Ontario coach George Koh (Ottawa, ON), while the Poomsae athletes were guided by coach Ri Seong Kang (Aurora, ON), whose expertise and mentorship helped elevate the team’s performance on the international stage.
“To witness our athletes not only reach the podium but make history on the international stage is incredibly rewarding. Their performances reflect years of dedication—not only from the athletes themselves but also from the coaches who have guided and supported them every step of the way. The experience gained here will help shape the future of taekwondo in Ontario in years to come.” said David Silverman, President of Taekwondo Ontario.
The 2025 Games showcased the strength and depth of Ontario’s Taekwondo talent, reinforcing the province’s role as a leader in high-performance sport development.
